How do you know if your child is ready to prepare for First Reconciliation & First Communion?

The following is a basic assessment to help you determine if your child is ready to begin their preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

Children are likely ready to begin preparation for the sacraments when you can answer yes to the following questions...

  • Your child is at least 7 years old and is in the 2nd grade (or grades above)

  • Your child has some understanding of the difference between right and wrong.

  • Your child is learning to know the difference between sins, accidents or mistakes.

  • Your child is capable of apologizing.

  • Your child has a relationship with Jesus and basic understanding that He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead.

  • Your child is beginning to know God as a loving Father who forgives us.

  • Your child can (for the most part) pay attention at weekly Sunday Mass.

  • Your child has some appreciation that God works through miracles.

  • Your child shows curiosity about the Eucharist.
